Copper and Aluminum scrap metal prices had to come down Monday morning here at Goldsboro Metal Recycling.  While prices have been somewhat steady for about three weeks, the global markets changed dramatically in the past 24 hours to the point that we had no choice but to lower prices.  China's stock market has fallen almost 20% in recent weeks and stabilized today, but it still down a major amount.

 

Greece has major debt problems with  it banks closed and the rest of the world is trying to figure out what to do, so with that Copper, Aluminum, Oil and other products around the world have dropped significantly.

Today is Monday, June 8, 2015.  My name is Greg Brown, President and CEO of the companies.

Overall the economy continues its slow growth around the world.  Last week the U.S. had a very strong jobs report and car sales in the U.S. had their best month since July 2005, almost 10 years ago.  Related with the slow growth in the U.S., the IMF, the International Monetary Fund, took down their forecast of U.S. growth and urged the U.S. not to raise interest rates in 2015.

Steel Production

While ferrous production came down a bit last week, it has been trending up for months and is now nicely up from its April multi year low.  Related a group of U.S. steel mills filed anti-dumping charges against foreign steel mills, due to the flood of imported steel.  As the U.S. economy continues to gain strength and with imports of scrap metal flat, the low prices of scrap metal causing low incoming rates to scrap yards caught up with the market. 

As was forecast about a week ago, the increase in ferrous pricing became a reality, with prices up $20 to $30 a Gross ton, the first real increase in months.  While this increase is significant, the question is, will it be enough to help reverse the enormous drop in material coming into scrap yards. 

Oil Rig Count

Steel consumption in the U.S. is not getting a lot of help from oil drilling, which until last year consumed enormous amount of metal.  Last week was the 26^th consecutive weekly decline in the oil rig count in the U.S.  The good news is with oil now up almost 50% from the multi-year low of a few months ago, the oil rig count is close to stabilizing, but Business Insiders’ graph is nothing other than ugly.

While scrap steel has had its first increase in months, Aluminum has been a totally different story.  Prices are at more than a 5 year low. 

Imports and last year’s high inventory levels caused some of this decline.  Aluminum inventory levels having hit multi year highs about a year ago are now at 5+ year lows.  Based on these new inventory lows and the U.S. Dollar having weakened a bit in recent weeks, we would expect Aluminum prices to stabilize in the coming weeks.

 

  Copper after having hit a multi month high about a month ago has been declining for weeks, having dropped about 25 cents in the past three weeks.  Of course with China continuing to slow, and 50% of the world’s copper consumed there, we see no major increase in copper prices coming any time soon.

 

We were in Las Vegas for the annual Waste Expo show last week.  Almost all the news there was positive for equipment suppliers.  The major drag on the waste industry is that recycling for the companies like Waste Management is not profitable and they are not investing in the recycling part of their business.  Waste is OK, but recycling is a problem due low commodity prices.  These continued low profits caused one the major metal recycling companies in the Midwest, PSC to announce new site closings.  In the past 30 days many scrap metal companies have closing sites and shutting down shredders. 

 

Prices for Aluminum and copper have come down this week in Raleigh and Goldsboro.

In the big picture the data shows that while things remain severely depressed for the recycling and commodities markets, we have seen the worst of it and things are slightly better.

Steel Prices - Goldsboro Scrap Metal Recycling

Last week was Ferrous selling week.  The good news is that prices were not down.  The bad news is, that they were up only slightly in some areas.  There have been more announcements of price increase by steel mills in the past week.  This could be followed by upward pressure in scrap prices.

The continued low ferrous prices mean volumes in scrap yards are somewhat better than they were 6+ weeks ago, but they remain severely depressed causing reduced flows of obsolete scrap.  Watch for more scrap yard closings, unless things change.

Steel production has stabilized, but was actually down a bit last week and is at a much lower level than last year.  There is no help from one of the larger users of steel; the oil industry.  The rig count fell yet again last week and is now at 668 rigs, almost 1,000 less than a recent year high of 1,609 in October 2014.  This is having the effect that the OPEC wanted in that oil has now risen 8 weeks in a row.  As U.S. slows production, prices are rising.  The Obama administration is making few friends with the Middle East in that the U.S. is becoming the new OPEC.  Our enormous production is now effecting global prices and keeping oil prices in line.  The good news is the U.S. is not stopping and has for the first time is going to allow drilling in the Artic.  More drilling, which is more supply, brings lower prices.

Copper Prices - (919) 731-5600

Copper, which is also known as Dr. Metal; the price of copper is an indicator of the health of the economy, is now at a 5 month high.  A very positive sign.  Of course at $2.93 on COMEX, it is much lower than the April 2011 high of $4.66, but it sure is better than $2.39 of some months ago.

The positive jobs report last week that drove the U.S. stock market to new highs is part of this positive news.  Last week there was also more good news in Europe about their economy and the Chinese have cut interest rates to boost their economy.  Silver linings in many places.

Aluminum, came down a bit, but is still near a multi month high and is higher than it was a year ago.

Scrap Metal prices in Goldsboro are UP!  We raised prices this morning.  The good news is we think steel prices could remain steady for a couple of months.  A discussed, due to soft demand from China, Turkey and the US is doing well, but not great, we had steel prices come down last week.  Copper has moved up, and then down this week just as it did last two weeks, so fast that we did not change prices. As said, it is not clear what will happen the rest of the year.  We are hearing things could go down a bit more over the next months, but sorry we do not know. It is even possible that prices could go up!  Yes, for items like copper, you can actually go to websites like www.cmegroup.com and watch the price of copper change every few seconds during the week.  Steel as many know usually changes once a month, but there is even no certainty to that.  As we wrote, there have been some articles that copper could go down next year.

As of today, we believe scrap metal steel prices will be up next month.  We do not see any major increases coming for a long time though.  The US economy is getting better slowly, but with China and Europe slowing down, that hurts the price of scrap metal in the U.S.  We at Goldsboro Metal Recycling continue to do our best to pay you the most.  For Commercial and Industrial companies, we a have the largest fleet of trucks in the Wayne County and beyond, picking up from factories and demolition sites.  We have fast service, due to we have almost twice as many scales as our biggest competitors.  We also ship direct to steel mills, by rail road car.  Many of them ship by truck and use middle men-brokers to sell their steel, meaning we have great shipping costs and prices.  We share that with you, not truckers and brokers!

Not good here.  Copper scrap metal prices hit a three year low this week.  They are slightly better today, but not much.  Scrap copper prices remain lower than that have been in months.
