Scrap Metal Prices as we unfortunately thought would happen are now down significantly.  Prices for most steel dropped $1.00/Hundred pounds Tuesday.  Yesterday, we dropped another $.75/Hundred on most steel and $.50/Hundred on cars and 'shred' (appliances/mixed metals).

 

 

This of course is good news for companies that buy steel, due to finished goods steel is falling in price, but scrap metal is now at lows not seen since late 2008, 7 years ago.

In this tough market we are still Goldsboro Recycling at its best.  We are not just a Junk Yard or a Salvage yard, we are the best Recycling Center in Wayne County, NC working with our customers to pay the most possible in this very tough market.

Based on continued weakness in exports of scrap metal from the United States to China, scrap metal is in a over supply position, so steel mills have yet again, dropped prices.  Based on that we have had to drop prices again on ferrous-steel and Junk Cars.

Scrap Metal Prices are now the lowest that have been since 2009.  Copper which  hit a high of $4.66 on COMEX dropped to $2.31 this week, less than half of what it was.

Steel, Cars and Appliances are about a less than a third of what they were.  

There is not an easy answer.  At Goldsboro Metal Recycling we do our best to pay you the most per pound for your Scrap Metal, Copper, Aluminum, Junk Cars, Computers, Old Appliances and more, but the amount we get is now at multi year lows.

The U.S. economy is not what we want it to be, but it is OK.  North Carolina's economy is better than most states.  The problem is China uses more than half the world's metal and their economy has slowed down significantly.  If they are not using a lot of metal, prices come down.

The commodity markets remain very unstable.  Note the below major steel (heavy melt) price drop in February that at the time no one had forecast.  When the below heavy melt/steel graph is updated in a day to two (the below heavy melt graph is week old), it will show an approx. $20/GT drop and we are hearing there could be another $25+ drop next month. 

As for copper (see below), about two weeks ago, we had a period of a couple of weeks of stable to slight increase in prices.  Then days after the U.S. reported:

-the best car sales in about 10 years in June,

-the best depending home sales in June in 9 years

-Lowest unemployment rate in 9 years for June

-The oil rig count went up for the first time the previous week, after 29 weeks of declines (oil rigs use a lot of steel)

….after all the above good news, China’s stock market was coming unglued (dropped 36% in 29 days) and the Greek issue became ugly, so copper hit new approx. 6+ year low, again, days after all the U.S. great news.

As said, prices in the steel (heavy melt) graph below will show lower data in a day or so and could go down next month.  If things remain stable in the U.S. and globally, my best forecast would be that prices could be about $10/GT lower near the end of the year then they are today and copper could be $.15+ lower. 

I will end with being like a true economist and say, ‘on the other hand’, if China pumps money into their economy and oil prices dive, that will be a key boost to the global economy, and prices could rise, but I am not ‘banking’ on that.

Copper and Aluminum scrap metal prices had to come down Monday morning here at Goldsboro Metal Recycling.  While prices have been somewhat steady for about three weeks, the global markets changed dramatically in the past 24 hours to the point that we had no choice but to lower prices.  China's stock market has fallen almost 20% in recent weeks and stabilized today, but it still down a major amount.

 

Greece has major debt problems with  it banks closed and the rest of the world is trying to figure out what to do, so with that Copper, Aluminum, Oil and other products around the world have dropped significantly.

Today is Monday, June 15, 2015.  My name is Greg Brown, President and CEO of the companies.
 
Overall while the global economy continues its slow steady growth, China which is a key driver for commodity pricing, continues to be very weak in scrap metal consumption.  This weakness along with the uneasiness with the financial debt problems in Greece, brought another problematic week for commodities.

Steel Production

Steel production had a nice little uptick last week and is up for the past few months, but it is still well below last year. 

Oil Rig Count

One of the reasons for this low steel production in the U.S. is that the Oil rig count has now fallen for 27 weeks in a row, and is now at the lowest point in almost 5 years.  Related, imported finished steel remains a problem for U.S. steel mills, thereby hurting their production.  As has been reported, scrap yards have been experiencing multi year lows of incoming scrap coming into their yards, so prices rose a bit two weeks ago, which the chart shows. 

Steel Prices

 Even with this ferrous increase, scrap flows remain very, very weak, as do profits.  Scrap yards that have mainly retail business remain under enormous profit pressure due to this low volume.  If the low growth continues in steel production, we could see another small increase in scrap steel prices due to the poor incoming scrap steel rate.  We know of one steel mill that stayed open this past Saturday in hopes of securing more incoming ferrous metal, due to the incoming scrap was so slow.

Copper Prices

Copper prices touched a three month low this morning and they remain near their 5 year low.  We see no catalyst that will cause an increase in copper prices anytime soon.  As we have discussed, China consumes 50% of the world’s copper and China is clearly not increasing their consumption.  The China slowdown has caused their government to drop interest rates multiple times in recent months to boost their economy and as we go to press, they may have dropped them again today.

Aluminum Prices

Aluminum dropped a bit this week and is close to the 5+ year low it hit about a year ago.  We remain in the belief that aluminum prices are near their bottom due to aluminum inventories are hitting new 5+ year lows.

With energy prices down in the past year, aluminum recycling is less of a driver, so again, there is little reason to believe aluminum prices will be coming up soon.
