Scrap Metal Prices as we unfortunately thought would happen are now down significantly.  Prices for most steel dropped $1.00/Hundred pounds Tuesday.  Yesterday, we dropped another $.75/Hundred on most steel and $.50/Hundred on cars and 'shred' (appliances/mixed metals).

 

 

This of course is good news for companies that buy steel, due to finished goods steel is falling in price, but scrap metal is now at lows not seen since late 2008, 7 years ago.

In this tough market we are still Goldsboro Recycling at its best.  We are not just a Junk Yard or a Salvage yard, we are the best Recycling Center in Wayne County, NC working with our customers to pay the most possible in this very tough market.

When you separate the materials inside your appliances, we can purchase the metals at their individual prices (which is always more than we pay for shred).

It’s also important to make sure your metals are separated into groups that can be easily moved. If you sell us a tangled pile of wires, we have to purchase all of the wire as shred- even if some of the wire is much more valuable. If we cannot separate types of metals, they are called “dirty” and they must be purchases at a lower rate.

Lastly, when possible (and safe), we recommend you strip any plastic coating off of your scrap metal and wires. The picture below shows some Aluminum Scrap Metal. If we purchase the Aluminum Fenders in the state shown below, you would receive less money than if you took the couple of seconds to remove the plastic coating layer. Scrap Metal Prices have been falling for more than a year.  Copper is at multi year lows and steel is close to multi years lows.  Metals are part of the global economy and the bad news is China and Europe are not using growing like they were.  This means that scrap metal from Europe, instead of being used there, is coming to the U.S. and is going to China.  Also, China is shipping finished Steel to the U.S., so it is hurting the U.S. steel industry and they are buying less scrap metal.   See the article below.

Bottom line is, we see copper staying at this low level for a while and importantly in about 10 days or so we see that we will be dropping scrap metal steel prices over $1.00 and could be as much as $2.00.

China Steel Exports Rise to Record While Iron Ore Imports Slide

China’s steel-product exports rose to a record as the economy cools while iron ore imports slid with prices.
Shipments in November increased 14 percent from the previous month to 9.72 million metric tons, according to data from the country’s customs administration today. Total exports in the first 11 months of 2014 are 47 percent higher than the same period last year at 83.6 million tons. Imports of iron ore, the main material for steel making, fell 15 percent last month to the lowest since February.
China’s steel exports have set records for three straight months as a slowing expansion and cooling construction sector damp demand. The country’s economy is forecast to grow at the slowest pace since 1990. China’s ruling Politburo last week said it will maintain a prudent monetary stance and keep growth within a reasonable range next year.
“Many trading houses doing business with end-users told us the market is terrible,” said Zeng Jiesheng, a Shanghai-based analyst with Mysteel.com, a researcher. “Steel millswere inclined to produce partly due to the low iron ore prices while demand in foreign markets picked up.”
The price of iron ore, a feedstock for blast furnaces, slumped 47 percent this year in China, falling below $70 for the first time since June 2009 on Nov. 25. Imports in November declined for the second month to 67.4 million tons, customs data showed today.
The country’s crude steel output rose 5 percent in the first 10 months of the year to 685 million tons, according to the latest figures from National Bureau of Statistics.
Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., China’s biggest publicly-traded steelmaker, cautioned in October that this quarter would be difficult for the company, reflecting the challenges facing an industry beset by overcapacity, a slowing domestic market and simmering trade tensions.
The price of steel reinforcement-bar, or rebar, used mostly in construction, declined 29 percent this year to 2,542 yuan a ton on the Shanghai Futures Exchange.

Disappointment On a Global Scale: Global markets across the board were down last week after disappointing economic news came out, hammering stock markets as well as commodities. PMI from Italy and Spain at .9 and Britain at 1.8 were all well below expectations and EU consumer prices were only .4% higher in July, the 10^th straight month at a level below the 1% target. Argentina defaulted on its debt and Portugal’s second largest bank reported a quarterly loss after it found more bad loans than  expected.

 

Here in the US the Q2 GDP came in at 4% after a -2.1% showing in Q1 and labor costs rose .6% as well in the same quarter (stagnant wages help restrain consumer spending). The Fed reduced its bond buying program from $35 billion down to $25 and noted that although the unemployment rate is 6.1%, “there remains significant underutilization of labor resources” which will keep interest rates and inflation low in the near term.  Some economists forecast a 3% growth rate for the rest of the year, well above the Fed’s target of 2%. The Fed wants to wait a “considerable time” after the bond buying program comes to an end before raising interest rates.

Metal prices firm in recent ranges on upbeat economic data

Base metals consolidated from session highs during late LME trading on Tuesday although the complex looked set to consolidation within recent ranges as macro data supports a firmer economic environment.

The copper price rose to its highest for nearly three months at one stage on Tuesday before settling in range-trade.  The aluminium price peaked to its highest for around one month, while the rest of the metals generally held at steady levels.

There was a string of positive US data releases which supported sentiments - Durable goods orders unexpectedly rose 0.8 percent in April - they had been seen falling 0.5 percent.

The Conference Board consumer confidence also advanced from 81.7 to 83 in May as “Americans turned more optimistic on the economy, stock prices and home values,” according to economists at OCBC in Singapore.

The US stock markets were buoyed by the upbeat US data, which also helped lift the US dollar broadly higher against most major currencies. Meanwhile, the euro was further weighed down by ECB Nowotny’s comments reinforcing market expectation for ECB to shift to more monetary easing on 5 June.

The euro was again under pressure around 1.3634 against the dollar, close to three-month lows of 1.3610.

In the metals, the copper price peaked at $6,966 before closing at $6,934 on Tuesday. Prices are now around $6,924.50, down almost $10 but tightness continued to flare in spreads- the cash/threes backwardation remained intense but has come down from $94 yesterday to the current $83.50.

Aluminium concluded at $1,828.50 and is currently down slightly to $1,824.50 per tonne. Stocks fell 8,650 tonnes to 5,221,950 tonnes and cancelled warrants increased 3,300 tonnes to 2,861,475 tonnes.

The nickel price was last $72 higher at $19,622. Stocks declined 96 tonnes to 280,308 tonnes, while tightness was evident in the nearby forward curve. It traded higher during the London hours yesterday to hit $19,761 as news that protests at Vale’s Goro nickel plant continue to prevent the plant from operating.

“The fact that the market ended the day in the red is a sign that the current bullish supports for nickel in recent weeks now seem to be fully priced in and the price seems set for further consolidation for some time to come,” said a note from Triland Metals.

In others, the lead price at $2,140 is down $2 and zinc lost $4.50 to the current $2,083 per tonne. Tin gained $18 at $23,369 - there was no change in stocks. The cash/threes backwardation has come down to around $15 - at the start of last week it was above $100. ShareThis
