Based on some last minute market moves, we are now almost sure, prices will be down about $1.75/Hundred pounds for Ferrous/Steel. 

 

We thought this would be effective today Monday, but it now seems like we can hold this off for another day or two.

 

If you have any ferrous material, today, Monday is the time to get it to us.

 

We are sorry for this action in a day or so, that we have to take, but global markets have deteriorated very significantly, mainly cashed by China's continued slowing.

Scrap Metal Prices are now the lowest that have been since 2009.  Copper which  hit a high of $4.66 on COMEX dropped to $2.31 this week, less than half of what it was.

Steel, Cars and Appliances are about a less than a third of what they were.  

There is not an easy answer.  At Goldsboro Metal Recycling we do our best to pay you the most per pound for your Scrap Metal, Copper, Aluminum, Junk Cars, Computers, Old Appliances and more, but the amount we get is now at multi year lows.

The U.S. economy is not what we want it to be, but it is OK.  North Carolina's economy is better than most states.  The problem is China uses more than half the world's metal and their economy has slowed down significantly.  If they are not using a lot of metal, prices come down.

Disappointment On a Global Scale: Global markets across the board were down last week after disappointing economic news came out, hammering stock markets as well as commodities. PMI from Italy and Spain at .9 and Britain at 1.8 were all well below expectations and EU consumer prices were only .4% higher in July, the 10^th straight month at a level below the 1% target. Argentina defaulted on its debt and Portugal’s second largest bank reported a quarterly loss after it found more bad loans than  expected.

 

Here in the US the Q2 GDP came in at 4% after a -2.1% showing in Q1 and labor costs rose .6% as well in the same quarter (stagnant wages help restrain consumer spending). The Fed reduced its bond buying program from $35 billion down to $25 and noted that although the unemployment rate is 6.1%, “there remains significant underutilization of labor resources” which will keep interest rates and inflation low in the near term.  Some economists forecast a 3% growth rate for the rest of the year, well above the Fed’s target of 2%. The Fed wants to wait a “considerable time” after the bond buying program comes to an end before raising interest rates.

Scrap Metal Prices for steel look little changed and possibly slightly down this month.  World markets are in clear flux for pricing and since literally what happens in China effects prices right here in Raleigh, North Carolina, we at Goldsboro Metal Recycling, do our best to deal with these changing dynamics.  As we write this, ferrous prices have not stabilized for the month.  The good news is two weeks ago, there was word that markets were down across the board for August, but that may be only for select products.  Here is why.  There is no question the U.S. is doing better, but of course too slowly.  Auto sales are up, home sales and home prices are up, jobs are being created, but with all that, as for steel, the U.S. only produces about 6% of the world’s steel and China produces about 47%.  Significant amounts of scrap metal from the U.S. goes to China.  China was growing at 11-12+ in recent years and now is growing at about 7%.  When they slow growth in the use of scrap metal, prices do not go up.  Related Europe is in a true recession, as we were years ago.

Copper prices are down very significantly from 2011.  For those of us in the Recycling business that has hurt.  Why are prices down? Cardboard
